One more time UK motorists have been targeted by fraudsters who are selling bogus insurance policies. Police has warned motorists to be aware of such ghost brokers who use plenty of tricks to fool people. They even had a call centre and floated advertisements which highlighted policies offered at rates which were 15% cheaper than the legal insurance companies.
Now referred to as ghost broker individuals such as Danyal Buckharee, 42, and Giovanni Recchia, 47, would use all tricks to give an impression that they were a genuine company. They even used to create office like noise with their iPods so that they can give a false impression of an ongoing office while calling their customers. Some of the fraudsters would approach motorists at places like malls and shopping centres to sell false policies too.
London Police even arrested one fraudster who was only 19 years old and was advertising cheap insurance deals on Gumtree. The Police have been investigating cases at places like Harris, Aberdeen, Inverness and the Isles of Skye.
As some of the ghost brokers used to manipulate addresses, driver’s age as well as previous claim history, policy holders could not find out whether the policies are actually valid or not. The fraudulent policies were sent in remote areas of the UK, so people of these areas are requested to call the insurer’s fraud department in case they receive any posts with such policies. The department would take immediate action and work in favour of the victims.
There are different kinds of insurance scams that target innocent motorists. One of them is called ‘cash for crash’ where valid policy holders were victimised by law breakers who would create accidents to claim insurance. Another kind of fraud is called the ‘flash for cash’ in which fraudsters would keep flashing their headlights to give signals to innocent motorists to come forward until they bang into them.
Most of such frauds where accidents were staged were targeted towards elderly people and lone women drivers. Whatever the case motorists need to be aware and learn to discriminate between actual drivers and fraudsters. Measures are taken by the government and police to bring down such events but this is only possible when the victims would reach out to insurer’s fraud department.
If you have suffered from something like this or have friends who have been going through insurance scam then ask them to contact their local police as well as insurer’s fraud department. Also, spread the word about such scams to save your family and friends from fraudsters. Again, little awareness can save you from big losses so be vigilant.
